Skype App

Technology is always changing and Skype is a great example of how technology is becoming a really great thing. The free Skype application allows you to video chat with other people that have a Skype account. So now you can video chat with a distant relative or a relative overseas. The options are endless for anyone that downloads this app. Skype also allows you to call and instant message other Skype users. Many people are now turning to Skype to stay in touch; it’s very easy to create a Skype account and profile, and users can get in touch with you easily and quickly. The app is completely free, however, to use certain Skype services, Skype does charge a small fee. Download the app on Android, iPhone, or Windows for more information.

5 Free iPhone & iPad Apps: Edition 1

With all the craze over iPhone and iPad apps these days, I’ve decided to do a weekly feature on 5 free apps that you can currently find in Apple’s App store.
For my first edition, I want to introduce a combination of games and some cool tools.

Epic War TD: An awesome tower defense game, in HIGH DEF. It doesn’t get better than that… oh wait, I forgot to mention that you’ll get 60 FPS visuals. (Download link)

Nearby Navigator: With this app, you can easily find nearby places with your phone’s built-in GPS for free! (Download link)

RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook launching in 16 countries

Research In Motion is ready to launch its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet in an additional 16 markets.
The tablet will be made available to customers in the U.K., Spain, Germany, Australia, and several other countries within the next 30 days, RIM said. Currently, the BlackBerry PlayBook is available only in the U.S. and Canada.
Unlike much of its competition, RIM's tablet focuses on enterprise customers first. The tablet boasts a 7-inch display and runs the company's new tablet operating system. It includes dual 1080p HD cameras for video conferencing and capture, and runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor. RIM's tablet comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage options, ranging in price from $499 to $699.
Those models are Wi-Fi-only. RIM plans to launch two 4G models later this year.
After its launch in April, the BlackBerry PlayBook performed relatively well on store shelves, reports suggested. Analyst Mike Abramsky from RBC Capital Markets said in April that RIM could have sold up to 50,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets on its launch day alone. Abramsky said that he expected RIM to ship 500,000 PlayBooks during its fiscal first quarter, which ended in May.
RIM plans to announce results for its first quarter next week.
Even if RIM hits the 500,000 shipments, the company will have a long way to go to catch up to Apple, the leader in the tablet space. At the Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this week, Apple said that it has sold 25 million iPad units since the tablet's launch last year.
RIM did not immediately respond to request for comment on when its tablet will launch more fully around the world, and what the pricing will be.
The full list of the locations in which the PlayBook will debut in the next month is this: the U.K., Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela

Casual games: Angry Birds HD

Angry Birds HD takes the undisputed king of casual gaming, the breakthrough addictive puzzler in the best tradition of the genre, and paints it across the bigger screen. The premise is the same, evil green pigs have stolen your eggs and your birds aim to get them back — with slingshots, explosives, boomerangs, and other manner of weaponized avian fury. Kill all the pigs to clear a level, do it with style and earn the elusive 3-stars. It starts off easy but ramps up quickly as the minutes turn to hours, especially on the less confined iPad screen. Time management games: Smurf’s Village

Sure, the ultimate goal of building the best village is just the same as other games, but Smurfs’ Village also has a story line. After each level increase, there’s dialogue and a quest, and also mini games you can play to earn more experience. The graphics are great and the gameplay is smooth. Smurfs’ Village is free but some items require smurfberries which are available as an in-app purchase. Smurfberries can also be used to speed up the growth of plants and construction of buildings. Video apps: Netflix

Netflix for iPad has a horrible interface — their website awkwardly wrapped in an app — but offers so much TV and movie content that looks so good on iPad that it’s still more than worthwhile. Whole seasons of TV shows and movies roughly one month after the BD/DVD release dates can be streamed directly to your iPad and if you use Netflix on your iPhone, Apple TV, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, etc. what you pause on one you can resume on the other. It does require a minimum $8 a month subscription and is only currently available in the US and Canada but it should be rolling out to more countries in 2011. Board games: Words with Friends HD

There’s an official Scrabble game for iPad but Words with Friends edges it out thanks to really good online play. It won’t let you play words that don’t exist, so there’s no bluffing or challenging strategy, but there is a built in chat feature so you can trash talk to your heart’s content. You can have multiple games against multiple friends going on at the same time, and push notifications let you know when it’s your turn make a word. [$2.99 - iTunes link]

Utility apps: Remote

Remote puts your desktop iTunes library on your iPad and in your lap. Your can browse through, pick, and play all your music, TV shows, and movies, and if you have AirPlay supported video (like Apple TV) or audio (AirPort Express attached speakers, etc.) you can control which room in your house they play on. In addition to browsing it works as a full on touchpad remote control for Apple TV or iTunes (one multiple Windows or Mac PCs) and makes the sometimes arduous task of entering passwords or search terms a breeze. Apple’s Remote app is especially handy at parties.
