Skype App

Technology is always changing and Skype is a great example of how technology is becoming a really great thing. The free Skype application allows you to video chat with other people that have a Skype account. So now you can video chat with a distant relative or a relative overseas. The options are endless for anyone that downloads this app. Skype also allows you to call and instant message other Skype users. Many people are now turning to Skype to stay in touch; it’s very easy to create a Skype account and profile, and users can get in touch with you easily and quickly. The app is completely free, however, to use certain Skype services, Skype does charge a small fee. Download the app on Android, iPhone, or Windows for more information.

Words With Friends Free App

Published by Newtoy, Inc. in July of 2009, the Words With Friends Free Application is a completely free app for the iPhone that allows you to play the increasingly popular Words With Friends game against anyone that uses the app. Words is a great game for the iPhone if you like competition and word games. It’s basically like Scrabble and the best part of it all is that it’s completely portable and free. There’s also a nifty feature that allows you to chat in-game to the person that you are playing. You can find this game in the app store under board games, and it is also currently in the top 25 most downloaded apps. Add your friends to the game for the best competition! The best way to earn the most points on Words is to save your big point letters (Z, Q, etc) for when you have a chance to place it on a double or triple word tile. This will ensure that you will get at least 20 points just for using that one letter. Comment your WWF username on this post to have people play you!

5 Free iPhone & iPad Apps: Edition 1

With all the craze over iPhone and iPad apps these days, I’ve decided to do a weekly feature on 5 free apps that you can currently find in Apple’s App store.
For my first edition, I want to introduce a combination of games and some cool tools.
  1. Epic War TD: An awesome tower defense game, in HIGH DEF. It doesn’t get better than that… oh wait, I forgot to mention that you’ll get 60 FPS visuals. (Download link)
  2. Vignettr: Add some cool effects and filters to your photos with this neat photography FX tool. (Download link)
  3. Nearby Navigator: With this app, you can easily find nearby places with your phone’s built-in GPS for free! (Download link)
  4. Ramp Champ: A fun and addicting game that combines the classic skee-ball and pinball into one. (Download link)
  5. Colorblind Vision: Be able to see, in real-time, what it’s like to be colorblind! (Download link)

Google Maps App

Definitely an essential application, Google Maps is available on most phones. Google Maps is basically a free GPS at your fingertips. You can use Google Maps to find gas stations, navigate to a city, or just find a friend’s house. It’s a great app for anyone that is always getting lost! You won’t ever need a paper map again if you have this app. I will admit that Android’s version of Google Maps is a little more advanced than iPhone’s; but both are still great and worth the download. Google Maps has Hotpot, which allows you to rate destinations on the maps and read ratings/reviews. I fully recommend downloading this app, especially Android users because on Android, this app is simply fantastic and a must use.

Free iPhone Games Download: Touchgrind

Touchgrind
Touchgrind, without a doubt, has the most intriguing use of a touch screen to date. The game controls just like the fingerboards that kids still play with today. The developer Illusion Labs really nailed the feel of this intriguing pastime and whether you enjoy skateboarding or not, you have to give them credit for taking a chance at a very unique control scheme.
Touchgrind has a steep learning curve. I absolutely can not stress this enough. My first few attempts at just popping an ollie failed miserably and I was tempted to just stop trying and walk away forever from the world of digital fingerboarding. As time progressed, I became familiar with the controls and everything felt natural. Just keep trying, you will get the controls, I promise.
It is difficult to explain how great it feels to do skateboard tricks on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Your index and middle fingers do all of the controlling of the board. Use your back finger to pop and the second finger to flick the board. When the board is in the air you can stomp down with your fingers to stop the rotation of the board to land whatever crazy trick you just pulled. You are able to do every skateboard trick imaginable just with the tips of your two fingers and it’s great.
The top down view gets to share some of the praise and criticism for the unique feel of the game. This view is great for controlling the board but makes it awfully difficult to see where you are going. Indicator bubbles appear when you are near rails or jumps but it is still difficult to gauge when to jump or maneuver around objects. A zoom button is located in the bottom right corner of the screen so you can mentally map out where you want to be going. This view helps but you are unable to control the board when the camera is zoomed out. In the end this is the only view the developers could have chosen for the game, you just have to take the good with the bad.
When the game is first launched there are a few options to choose from. You can watch a bunch of how-to videos showing off specific tricks. A “Warm Up” area is in place for you to skate around a small course without a timer or objective, just to get a feel for the board. The “Jam Session” is also not timed so you can position your board for a best trick score and finally there is the “Competition”. You will spend most of your time competing with yourself here. A timer is set at 100 seconds and you must string together enough tricks to attain the ultimate high score. Your score multiplier varies on the tricks you do or what objects you grind on. If you fail and fall off of your board, the multiplier disappears.
The variety of courses is extremely slim. Only two variations exist. One is in the “Warm Up” section of the game and the other course is used for both the “Jam Session” and “Competition”. The variety of objects to hit in the “Competition” mode is great but there just needs to be more courses, or even a half pipe. The developers say the game is built on a “Game 2.0″ concept where gamers can chime in and tell the developers what it is they want included in the next build of the game.
The game begins with only a single board unlocked. You must participate in the “Competition” to earn new boards. Various point levels must be obtained to unlock the rest of the boards all the way up to 1.5 million points. It seems like a daunting task, but spend enough time playing and you will be able to unlock at least most of the boards.
There needs to be some sort of head-to-head interaction. Whether it’s just online leaderboards or a whole set of multiplayer options. I will take whatever I can get because I can only beat my high score so many times before I want to show off my skills to the world of digital fingerboarding. This game is just begging for a H-O-R-S-E style online multiplayer option.
This is version 1.0 of Touchgrind. Illusion Labs has room for improvement, especially in the area of adding variety to the game play but the concept and controls are spot on. Touchgrind is exactly what the App Store and iPhone/iPod Touch needs in a game to sustain the hype. Developers need to think up new and exciting ways to utilize the features of this great gaming platform and Illusion Labs has done that with Touchgrind.

Free iPhone Games Download: Hysteria Project (iPhone Cracked Games)

You wake up in a filthy room, your hands and feet bound with duct tape. You have no idea how you got there. No clue as to who took you. All you know is that you need to escape before they come back to something unthinkable to you — something that involves an axe. That’s the opening of Hysteria Project, a new choose-your-own-adventure game for the iDevice, shot entirely on digital video. It’s a creepy set-up, to be sure. But does the game have the mileage to back up its intriguing premise? Or is this just a retread of those full-motion video games that helped doom the SEGA CD to the dustbin of history?
hysteria project
Hysteria Project gets a few things correct right away.Unless you make every wrong move in your escape attempt, you will likely get to the end of Hysteria Project in about an hour. It’s doubtful you’ll replay the game, too, since there seems to be just one correct path through the game. Once you know the choices to make to get out alive, there’s no reason to restart Hysteria Project unless you absolutely have a scene or two you want to replay.
Nobody wants to wake up like this.
The progression of the game is very straightforward. Every couple minutes, you have a choice to make. The screen fades to a decision tree. You tap the desired choice and then watch the next segment to see if you made the right or wrong move. If you pick a literal dead end, you go back anywhere between one to three choices in the decision tree. This may frustrate you much like it did me, especially when you’re bumped back the full three and have to watch the same sequences over again with no way to skip ahead.
Occasionally, you must interact with the video by tapping specific spots on the screen as bloody handprints appear. For example, when weaving through a tricky set of tripwires, you must touch the hands quickly before you accidentally trigger an explosion. Timing is everything on these scenes and the required response time gets tighter as you close in on the end of the game. There are a couple puzzles, too. One involves a strange tattoo on your arm. The other is a shred of paper discovered that holds the key to escaping a forest. I’ll spoil neither here, but I liked the paper puzzle quite a bit. Pretty clever.
My chief complaint with Hysteria Project is that it seems to lose focus as it goes on. The game opens strong. But then it wanders. It employs a somewhat cheap mechanic to kick off the back half of the game that I didn’t buy at all. That said, the ending shows a lot of promise for a future sequel.
The video sequences themselves are nicely done. The whole game is seen through the eyes of the kidnapped person — you — and so from time to time, you see your hands or feet in the frame. The feet work looks a touch awkward, though. The locations were well chosen. The forest is suitably creepy, especially when you turn back and see the hatchet man moving through the mist after you. There are a few digital elements that appear from time to time, such as the enhancement of the lights on the tripwire explosives or this “thing” that occasionally appears in the forest but is never fully explained. (Chapter two of Hysteria project, perhaps?) The compression results in a lot of artifacting, but it doesn’t really interfere with the narrative. The music is very good, too. It drones on and on, working overtime to create a palpable sense of dread.

Free iPhone Games Download: Fast & Furious (Cracked Games)

Fast Furious iPhoneIt closely follows the storyline of the new blockbuster movie and uses social networking and Internet features including the ability to upload fastest races to YouTube, site posts and race challenges, plus full use of the accelerometer and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The Fast & Furious iPhone game follows the story of the film and puts you behind the wheel of over 32 muscle, import tuner and exotic cars to master 7 exciting racing modes including: Road Race, Drift Race, Drag Race, GPS Race, Tunnel Run, Pursuit and Evade.
There are 18 levels in four unique environments: Dominican Republic, LA, Mexico and the tunnel between Mexico and the USA.
The driving itself is pretty straight forward. Your car auto accelerates and you steer by tilting. Touch the car to brake and touch NOS tank to use your nitro. There are a few specific controls depending on the game mode but these are all spelt out before each race. On the whole, driving the car is easy (and I generally hate tilt games) and while you wont necessarily complete everything at the first attempt, you should be able to clear the 26 races within a few hours. This is where I would usually talk about the awards that are employed to stretch out the longevity. It’s true, Fast and Furious has these awards, most of these will drop out as you complete the game. But, as far as longevity is concerned, that is all down to the Cloudcell – Fast and Furious own online leaderboard.
Online leaderboards aren’t new on mobiles but the execution here is very impressive. After a quick registration, you can compete online where you race mirror tracks against the clock. It’s not Mario Kart and you cant race other opponents online (although you can have local Bluetooth matches). Instead, your best times are posted and you have the option of uploading your replays to the server (via Youtube). The system works quickly and even stores your replays locally allowing you to upload them when you are ready.

How To Make a OS X Lion Boot Disk

Click to view the original image of 554x371px.

The first question that popped into my head after it was revealed that Lion would be a download only upgrade was "what if I need a boot disk?"

I've had too many hard drives crash, and had to reinstall too many operating systems to do without a physical boot disk. Plus I've never been one to tote around an external bootable hard drive. Thankfully creating a Lion boot disk is quite painless.

Egg Freckles posted the following instructions earlier today.

  1. Purchase and download Lion from the Mac App Store on any Lion compatible Mac running Snow Leopard.
  2. Right click on “Mac OS X Lion” installer and choose the option to “Show Package Contents.”
  3. Inside the Contents folder that appears you will find a SharedSupport folder and inside the SharedSupport folder you will find the “InstallESD.dmg.” This is the Lion boot disc image we have all been waiting for.
  4. Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to another folder like the Desktop.
  5. Launch Disk Utility and click the burn button.
  6. Select the copied “InstallESD.dmg” as the image to burn, insert a standard sized 4.7 GB DVD, and wait for your new Lion Boot Disc to come out toasty hot.

Now you know how to make your very own OS X Lion boot disk once Lion is available. You will be able install it on any of your Lion compatible Mac's like you did before the digital download revolution. And for the Macbook Air or Mac Mini server, which lack an optical drive, users can utilize Disk Utility's Restore function to image the Lion boot disc onto an external drive to perform a clean install.

Unless you've got an early build of Lion, bookmark these instructions, copy them, or store them away in your photographic memory for future use when Lion is available next month

iPhone 4 Modded into Swiss 'Time Machine'

Click to view the original image of 550x431px.

For iPhone modders with expensive tastes, this nifty little creation from Gresso may be right up your alley - that is, of course, if you have $6,000 to blow when every free clock app in existence can pretty much provide the same functionality and then some. Still, if you like the ornate look of an iPhone 4 with six expensive watches embedded in its back, this is the iDevice for you.

If the name Gresso sounds familiar, it's the same maker of the infamous diamond-encrusted iPhone cases and similar over-the-top expensive accessories that no one could possibly need, but perhaps want for the sake of impressing others. What we have here is the new iPhone 4 'Time Machine.' And from the front, it looks like any other iPhone 4. The back, however, is a different story.

On the reverse side of the current-generation Apple touchscreen smartphone are six Swiss mechanical watches - yes, the very pricey variety of watches that you would expect to see adorning the wrist of a James Bond villain. Best of all, as you monitor at least six international times, you can do so in style. Keeping consistent with its history, Grasso has encrusted each watch with both diamonds and mineral glass.

And in case you're wondering, this little beuaty is only 1mm thicker than the iPhone 4 without Swiss watches fixed to its rear. Although its a safe bet that these won't sell to the masses with any great success, one can only image that Grasso has done pretty well to date with its over-the-top creations to still be cranking out new and impractical ideas such as this one.

Possible iPhone/iPad Update Hints in iOS5

Sources for TUAW say that they may have found possible hints of two iPad 3 and iPhone 5 models within the iOS 5 framework. Found in the USB device files in an unreleased iOS 5, the information found gives credible evidence to the above statement. However, no hints on a possible iPod Touch 5 have been found.

There are declarations in the system files found that reference an "iPad 3,1" and an "iPad 3,2." The same for the iPhone 5 - "4,1" and "4,2" (iPhone 5 is a fourth generation device). As mentioned above, there are no hints of the iPod Touch 5 found in the system files. Based upon this speculation, it may be true that Apple is reserving their September release for the iPhone 5, not the iPod Touch 5.

The article from TUAW made an important note:

Of course, experience has shown that model registrations do not mean that these items always become an actual shipping product. For example, it took almost a year for the iPhone 3,3 (the iPhone 4 for Verizon) to ship, and the iPhone 3,2 never became a product. Sources believe that's because alleged carrier deals probably fell through for a third iPhone 4.
The coming months will tell if what has been found is indeed true or not. For information to be found in system files however is quite substantial. Expect more updates in this regard in the coming future

Apple Officially Bans DUI Checkpoint Apps

Click to view the original image of 606x448px.

All the noise made earlier this year about a number of iOS apps that alert drivers to DUI checkpoints got Apple's attention. The apps are now explicitly banned by Apple.

A change in the App Store Review Guidelines was spurred by a letter from four democratic U.S. senators addressing the issue. The senators specifically asked for the removal of apps that provide "a database of DUI checkpoints updated in real-time.

The change in the guidelines is in section 22.8 and reads as follows:

Apps which contain DUI checkpoints that are not published by law enforcement agencies, or encourage and enable drunk driving, will be rejected.
It seems the new verbiage only applies to applications that only offer ways to highlight and avoid DUI checkpoints. Many of the Apps that offer information on DUI checkpoints also offer a ton of other information on red lights, speed cameras, accidents and other traffic information. It has yet to be seen what the fallout from this change will be for current applications in the App Store, whether they will be removed or must have the DUI information removed.

iOS 5 Appears to Follow JB Lead Making FaceTime Available Over 3G

Click to view the original image of 604x700px.

It looks like Apple has taken yet another directive from the JB community, which was more than just a few steps ahead of the Cupertino titans when jailbreakers brought FaceTime to 3G last year. But it now appears that iOS 5 will make the feature available to non-jailbroken iPhones too.

Based on the findings of a few curious devs who have poked around the new iOS 5 beta, FaceTime is poised to work over 3G for the first official time. However, just because the functionality is there and images from users tinkering with the beta confirm it, there's one enormous variable that could impact if and how we enjoy or access FaceTime over 3G. I'm referring, naturally, to Apple's carriers in the US.

Although I could be wrong, it seems highly unlikely that AT&T and Verizon will simply stand by and watch as Apple enables FaceTime to work over the carriers' respective (and already burdened) networks. Instead, one would logically assume that additional fees or data plan tiers would be implemented over time. Of course, that's just my assumption. Please keep in mind that inquiries to both AT&T and Verizon this afternoon did not yield a response on the matter.

Nonetheless, it doesn't come as a major shocker that Apple is traveling down the path of 3G FaceTime usage. Many believe Apple should have provided that functionality when the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 originally dropped last year. And if not for JB, we still wouldn't know the joys that non-JB iPhones continue to miss out on

OmniVision Rumored to Supply Bulk of iPhone 5 8MP Camera Sensors

Although many rumors and unanswered questions remain regarding the next generation iPhone (including its name and release date), it's a safe assumption - based on the vast array of corroborating reports we've heard - that the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 will sport an 8MP camera.

What we can't get a straight answer on, however, is the supplier of the 8MP camera sensor that will deliver the best camera to date on Apple's touchscreen handset. Two months ago, Sony CEO Howard Stringer hinted to The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg that Sony's eight-megapixel sensor - which, incidentally, can also be found on Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo - is likely the sensor that will be found on the next-gen iPhone.

Well, that was two months ago.

Today, word has surfaced from the far east - AKA DigiTimes - that Apple is ordering boatloads of camera sensor components from OmniVision for the next iPhone, which could go into production as early as late July or early August, ahead of a prospective but not confirmed September 2011 release. All told, Sony is expected to provide only 10% of the camera sensors for the next iPhone. 90% will come from OmniVision, according to DigiTimes.

Despite rampant speculation - and hopes - that Apple would have provided a preview of the next-gen iPhone at yesterday's kick-off to WWDC, all we got was a software extravaganza free of any and all appearances by new or refreshed hardware.

iPhone Available on 200 Carriers Worldwide

A recent report from AllThingsD stated that from March of this year until now (June), the amount of carriers across the globe that have the iPhone has jumped from 186 to 200 carriers. In light of WWDC this week and the expected release of the iPhone 5, this is a bold step on Apple's part to continue expanding the iPhone worldwide.

Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope in the article quotes this reason why Apple is on the move for greater expansion;

Apple is adding lots of new carriers abroad. They’ll more than make up for any decline due to folks holding off on their iPhone 4 purchase for news of the iPhone 5 or 4s.
Also, as iOS 5 will not be supported on the iPhone 3GS (EDIT - compatible with 3GS but does not support of all features of iOS5) and below, it is a wise decision for Apple to place more mobile networks to support not only the upcoming iPhone 4s and 5 but their new premier software, iOS 5. Also a recent discovery gave some credibility on the fact that the iPhone 5 could be releasing in September as speculated. For this reason, Apple is seemingly guaranteed a steady flow of income and rapid iDevice production as WWDC will soon reveal what is up next for iDevice users worldwide.

[Windows] How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS on 3.0 with purplera1n

Geohot has released his iPhone 3GS*jailbreak named purplerain. Avaialable for download*here this has to be one of the easiest jailbreaks to use (if it works*).

Instructions:

1.*Download purplera1n. This download is Windows only.*Also it doesn’t work on Windows*7. MMi user mutigers42 among others report that Windows 7 works.

Quote:
I clicked make it rain, it said “putting in recovery*mode” – my phone kind of froze, didn’t turn off or anything and no response, until i closed the app and unplugged the USB cable*and replugged it back in – then the apple logo came on and recovery mode

After i did that, i just ran the program again – and it worked perfectly
It IS beta so make sure you have all your data before trying to use this tool.

This tool is*just for jailbreak and will NOT activate the phone or unlock it. Therefore, you should have an activated iPhone before following the guide.

Please backup the iPhone 3GS before following the procedure below.

2. Run purplera1n.

3. Click make it ra1n.

You should see a screen where purplera1n is connecting to your iphone.

Sadly that’s as far as I get (I blame betanesssss).
Edit: you need to have C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleMobile Device SupportbiniTunesMobileDevice.dll
I’m running widows*off of D drive so thats why mine didn’t work. Simple making that directory and copying the file to c drive has fixed my problems.

BUT those of you lucky enough to make it all the way the remainder of the steps are as follows:

purplera1n on PC*will say ‘done, wait for reboot’.

4. After the iPhone boots, it will have a new app ‘Freeze’ with white icon.

5. Open Freeze and tap ‘Install Cydia’. It will now download and install the package and then clean the installation. Wait till it says ‘Finished!’ and then just exit to home screen. If you still don’t have cydia, reboot the phone and use freeze again.

Your iPhone 3GS is now jailbroken with Cydia installed!

The credit for this wonderful tool goes to*GeoHotz! Thanks to mepp for help with screenshots!
